Sanctuary of Our Lady of Health

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Health is located in the village of Volastra, above Manarola, in a panoramic position surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. The name of the village probably derives from Vicus oleaster, “village of the olive trees”, indicating its historic connection with the agricultural landscape.

The sanctuary is one of the oldest places of worship in the area and is part of the system of Cinque Terre sanctuaries, together with Montenero, Reggio, Soviore and Nostra Signora delle Grazie. The building dates back to the 12th century, although the first documentary evidence dates from 1240.

The structure is simple, Romanesque style with Gothic elements: the gabled façade in local stone has a pointed-arch portal topped by a small mullioned window, while narrow single-lancet windows open along the sides. The interior has a single nave, with a vaulted ceiling and a Baroque altar. Here, an image of the Madonna is venerated; it was introduced into the sanctuary at the end of the 16th century and crowned in the 19th century, gradually making this place the main centre of Marian devotion in the area.

The sanctuary is linked to the religious life of the community and to local tradition. The main feast is celebrated on 8 September, with religious ceremonies, while other smaller celebrations take place during the year.

How to reach us

It is mainly reached on foot from Manarola via a trail of about 2 km, with a climb through terraces and olive groves that takes about 45-60 minutes. The route also passes through Piè di Fiesse, a junction with other trails in the area. Alternatively, Volastra can also be reached by local bus or from the coastal road. From the square in front of the sanctuary, other hiking routes also depart, including the Sentiero Verde Azzurro towards Corniglia and sections of the Via dei Santuari.
