Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montenero
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montenero stands above Riomaggiore, at about 340 metres above sea level, in a panoramic position overlooking the sea. It is one of the most meaningful places in the area, both religiously and scenically, and an important destination for those who want to leave the village and climb towards the hills.
The church is first documented in 1335 and is the result of a series of interventions and renovations carried out up to the 19th century.
The building has a three-nave structure and preserves an image of the Madonna and Child, object of particular devotion. According to local tradition, the icon has very ancient origins, although studies identify it as a painting on canvas probably dating from the 16th century.
Over time, the sanctuary has maintained a central role in the religious life of Riomaggiore, becoming a reference point for celebrations and pilgrimages.
The sanctuary is still an important part of Riomaggiore’s religious life and is linked to some of the village’s main annual celebrations. The most important moment is Pentecost, when residents walk in procession from the village to the sanctuary. On this occasion, the collection of ex-votos known as “Gli ori di Montenero” is displayed, a testimony to the devotion of the community. Another significant celebration is the Feast of the Coronation, held on the fourth Sunday of July and also preceded by a procession.
In the warmer months, it is advisable to go up early in the morning or late in the afternoon, avoiding the hottest hours of the day.
How to reach us
The sanctuary is mainly accessible on foot, via several routes.
From Riomaggiore – Via Grande (SVA, former trail no. 3): departure from the Lavaccio area, in the upper part of the village, along the SVA trail, a historic route also used for processions. Along the way, you will find votive shrines dedicated to the Madonna. The first section follows the canal, then climbs through terraced vineyards and Mediterranean vegetation. Walking time: about 1-1.5 hours. Length: about 3.5 km.
From the Litoranea road (SP 370): access from the provincial road, followed by a short pedestrian route to the sanctuary. Walking time: about 15-20 minutes. This is the shortest and least demanding option.
