Torre Guardiola trail

The Torre Guardiola trekking route leads through one of Riomaggiore’s most valuable natural and scenic areas, surrounded by the typical vegetation of the Cinque Terre coastline.

The route runs through a former military area dating back to the Second World War and takes its name from an old fortification once used to watch over the coast and prevent possible attacks by Saracen raiders. Until 2010, Torre Guardiola was also home to the Environmental Education Centre of the Cinque Terre National Park.

The route can be reached from the village of Riomaggiore by taking the road that climbs from the village towards the coastal road. After about 300 metres along the coastal road, the route continues beyond the gate on the right. The trail is steep and alternates between sections of paved track and paths surrounded by Mediterranean scrub.

Along the way, several information panels introduce visitors to the local natural environment, illustrating the different plant species and the main types of vegetation found in the area, from Mediterranean scrub to garrigue and salt-tolerant plants, as well as the ecology of these coastal habitats.

Torre Guardiola is also an interesting spot for birdwatching. Among the vegetation, visitors may observe several species typical of Mediterranean scrub, such as the Sardinian warbler and the common whitethroat, while gulls and falcons can be spotted along the coast, where they nest. During migration periods, the area also welcomes a variety of seasonal bird species.

By turning right at the junction above the beach and continuing downhill, it is possible to reach an equipped picnic area, close to natural pools where visitors can swim.

A route combining landscape, nature and traces of the past, offering the opportunity to discover the richness of the Cinque Terre’s coastal environments.
