Volastra – Case Pianca
Trail 586, historically numbered 6D, is considered one of the most spectacular and panoramic routes in the entire Cinque Terre National Park. Located at around 300 metres above the famous Sentiero Azzurro, it runs along the hillside, offering an immersive experience between sea and vineyards.
This itinerary is of great landscape importance because it crosses the famous terraces of the DOC wine production area known as Le Coste, characterised by perfectly preserved dry-stone walls.
The walk begins in the square of the Church of Nostra Signora della Salute in Volastra. The first section develops on a gentle, almost level gradient, skirting the vineyards and running slightly below Provincial Road SP51. Along this section, you can admire the rural engineering of the dry-stone walls that support the crops overlooking the sea.
Once you reach Case Porciana, the landscape changes: after passing the few houses, the trail enters a wood of maritime pines and holm oaks, growing where vineyards once stood and have since been abandoned. Despite the woodland vegetation, the route maintains a constant and evocative view of the coast.
The trail ends at the intersection with trail 587, Corniglia-Sella Marvede, located just below Case Pianca. From this junction, it is possible to continue towards the village of Corniglia or climb back up towards the ridge.
Useful info
- Water points: there is a fountain in the village of Volastra, at the starting point of the hike
- Trail status: this section has recently undergone extraordinary maintenance and slope stabilisation works. Always check that it is actually open on the official Park website before setting out
- Historical interest: the Church of Nostra Signora della Salute in Volastra is an important architectural feature located right at the beginning of the route
- Footwear: hiking shoes are required to safely tackle the dirt and woodland sections
Note
One of the most beautiful spots for vineyards and scenery. It’s doable in summer, but best visited early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
