Via dell’Amore

The Via dell’Amore is the coastal path connecting Riomaggiore and Manarola, and it is one of the most iconic routes in the Cinque Terre.

It is a pedestrian route of approximately 900 metres, carved into the rock above the sea, allowing visitors to cross the landscape without significant elevation changes. It is one of the few routes in the area that is also accessible to those without hiking experience, designed more for walking and contemplation than for trekking.

Built in the 1920s during works to double the Genoa-La Spezia railway line, the route originally served as a technical service path. Only later was it used by the inhabitants of the two villages and, over time, became a symbolic walk known as the Via dell’Amore, the Way of Love.

After a long closure caused by a landslide, the path was completely secured and reopened to the public in 2024, returning to its role as one of the most visited places in the area.

Today, access is regulated to ensure safety and protect the landscape. The route can be walked in one direction only, from Riomaggiore to Manarola, with limited entries and mandatory booking during the busiest periods. Access is generally included in the dedicated Cinque Terre Card.

The walking time is short, around 20 minutes, but it is advisable to allow more time to stop along the way. The entrances are located near the railway stations of the two villages, making the route easy to access.
