Sunsets from Panoramic Viewpoints

Watching the sunset here is not simply about choosing a viewpoint. It means deciding from which perspective you want to experience the territory: from the sea, from the small harbour, from a scenic lookout, from a trail among the vineyards or from a sanctuary suspended above the coast.

Sunset is one of the simplest, yet most intense, experiences to enjoy between these two villages. It does not require much planning: just choose the right place, arrive a little early and give yourself time to stay.

The most beautiful panoramic viewpoints

Punta Bonfiglio, Manarola viewpoint

This is probably the most iconic place to see Manarola at sunset. From here, the village appears in its most recognisable form: compact colourful houses, the sea below and the rock supporting the settlement.

It is the right place if you want to understand why Manarola is one of the most photographed villages in the Cinque Terre. The best advice is to arrive shortly before sunset and not limit yourself to a quick photo: stay a little longer and watch how the light changes on the façades and over the sea.

Riomaggiore harbour

The small harbour is one of the easiest places to experience sunset without moving far from the village. Boats, vertical houses, rock and sea create an intimate and very powerful scene.

Here, sunset is not only a view, but an atmosphere: the village behind you, the sound of the water, people making their way down towards the sea. It is perfect if you want a beautiful view without tackling climbs or trails.

Riomaggiore Castle

If you want to see Riomaggiore from above without taking on a real hike, the Castle is one of the most interesting viewpoints. Located in the upper part of the village, it offers views of both the sea and the village.

It is a perfect choice if you are looking for a sunset that feels both urban and panoramic. You are not yet immersed in the trails, but you have already left the harbour level behind and can better appreciate the vertical structure of the village.

The trails

For a sunset more closely connected to the agricultural landscape, choose one of the trails between Riomaggiore and Manarola and watch the light change among the terraces. Sunset falls on dry-stone walls, rows of vines, sea and ridges, creating a more rural and less immediate experience than the most famous viewpoints.

Nostra Signora di Montenero Sanctuary 

For a wider and more contemplative sunset, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montenero is one of the most evocative places above Riomaggiore. Standing at around 340 metres above sea level, it offers an open view over the Cinque Terre coastline: from the Punta Mesco promontory to Porto Venere and Palmaria Island.

Reaching it requires more effort than the viewpoints close to the villages. The sanctuary is accessible on foot, along trails that climb through Mediterranean scrub, terraces and sea views.

Arriving here in the late afternoon means seeing Riomaggiore change before your eyes: the village becomes part of a larger landscape made of ridges, open sea, vineyards, rugged coastline and light slowly descending towards the horizon. It is a perfect choice if you are looking for silence, depth and a view capable of telling the Cinque Terre as a whole.

Practical tip: plan your ascent carefully, and above all your return. If you expect to walk back after sunset, bring a headlamp and wear suitable shoes.
